Holidays on the Moselle – testimonials from our guests
Holidays on the Moselle as a tradition
Our trip to the Moselle had been planned for quite some time. As children, we had often spent holidays with our family on the Moselle. Back then, flying was still a luxury for a family of five. At that time, the Moselle was the perfect place for a holiday. Although it had fallen into oblivion over the years, I had now convinced my wife to take another holiday on the Moselle.
We quickly found a suitable time in early summer and submitted our holiday requests. We then updated our garage by purchasing e-bikes. We had planned to drive to the Moselle and go on short bike rides every day from there. The advantage of this was that if we had a bad day, we could stay in the local restaurants or drive to another location. My wife booked some accommodation in advance so that we could spend a total of three weeks on holiday on the Moselle. At the beginning of July, our tour and our holiday on the Moselle could finally begin. We strapped the bike racks onto the car and set off from the Düsseldorf region to Rhineland-Palatinate on the Moselle.
Your holiday on the Moselle can begin
Our first destination on the Moselle was Cochem. Cochem is a special place. Reichsburg Castle towers above the town of Cochem. Cochem boasts a wide range of restaurants and shops. It also offers some very special leisure activities. The climb up to the castle is a bit of a sporting challenge, but tourists are rewarded with a wonderful view over this section of the Moselle. The mustard museum entices visitors with its own unique charm. The mustard pots purchased there have a distinctive culinary flavour and are something different from the standard mustard bought in supermarkets. (We later discovered that we could easily refill these pots in Cologne).
Thanks to its mountainous location, we were also able to put our bikes through a stress test there. The mountainous landscape, always in the shadow of the forest, stands in stark contrast to the flat Moselle valley. After four days, we had seen enough of Cochem. Looking back, our next stop was the highlight of our trip to the Moselle.
Holiday flat in Wolf on the Moselle
Between Kröv and Traben-Traben, my wife had arranged for us to stay at a Holiday flat rented. We had already seen pictures of the area on Google. At this point, the Moselle almost surrounds the small village of Wolf. The panorama here is phenomenal. It offers a 360-degree view of the Moselle. As I am personally very interested in history, it was of course an ideal location on the Moselle. The ruins of Mont-Royal are located nearby. The French King Louis XIV had a huge fortress built here in the late 17th century. The monastery ruins are located in the village of Wolf on the Moselle itself. The Brothers of the Common Life built a monastery here on the Moselle in Wolf at the beginning of the 15th century. Relics of the brotherhood can be found throughout Germany.

The monastery is surrounded by nature and, strangely enough, very far from the village. The view is fantastic. On the advice of the villagers, we took advantage of the good weather at the time to go on a hike over the mountain. The hike was wonderful. The green meadows combined with the forest were a pleasant surprise. We had bought some bread rolls, grape juice, water, orange juice and cheese cubes for a snack. In glorious sunshine, we were able to have a little picnic on the mountain top and recharge our batteries. After hiking for a few more minutes, we looked down on the Moselle valley again. The view of Bernkastel-Kues and the vineyards gave us renewed energy, so we spent a few more hours in the romantic town centre of Bernkastel-Kues. On the way back, we decided to take the lazy option and took a tourist boat back to wolf to get there.

mission Mosel Camino Hiking between vineyards and beautiful nature
As an avid hiker, there are countless hiking trails and beautiful hiking routes in this world. However, some routes fall into a special category. These hiking trails are like receiving an award, and it takes a lot of effort to seriously tackle these projects. For me personally, this includes hiking the Way of St. James in Spain, some of which are over 800 kilometres long. To get started and convince my wife Sarah of this plan, we wanted to do a test run first to get a feel for it. After a quick web search, we came across the „Mosel Camino“ St James' Way Mosel Koblenz-Tier. The manageable 197 kilometres along the beautiful Moselle Valley and a few sights to see along the way. Many reports from other hikers got us in the mood for a wonderful hiking tour with beautiful views of the vineyards and through many small villages, each with their own unique charm.
Our project is being realised
The starting point for this pilgrimage route is Koblenz. The destination of our journey is the Benedictine Abbey of St. Mathias in Trier, which is also the oldest city in Germany. We were able to travel comfortably by train from our home town of Viersen to Koblenz. In Koblenz on the Moselle, we used the early hours of the morning to visit the Electoral Palace of Koblenz. The palace, located directly on the Rhine, is incredibly pompous and elegant in its appearance. Its convenient location also makes it easy to visit the Deutsches Eck. Right at the confluence of the Moselle and the Rhine, holidaymakers are treated to a wonderful view. We spontaneously decided to take a quick look at Ehrenbreitschein Fortress, but with the proviso that we would immediately set off on the hiking trail afterwards. Ehrenbreitschein Fortress is highly recommended for a holiday on the Moselle or Rhine. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time in the end, so we had to skip our hike in the centre. We simply enjoyed the first few metres on the hiking trail. The green surroundings and hiking between forest clearings in a varied and planted environment noticeably lowered our pulse and we felt a sense of inner peace. Sarah was so happy and in a good mood.

We spent our first night in a small guesthouse in Alken. The next morning, we set off again full of energy. However, I remember one day of the entire hike particularly well. In the morning, the clouds had already rolled in. Around midday, however, rays of sunshine began to break through. This gave Sarah and me hope, so we set ourselves the goal of reaching Bernkastel-Kues. This would take us halfway along the entire hiking route.
A rainy Friday evening with a happy ending
The holiday on the Moselle had been a complete success so far. Every day we were blessed with sunshine and pleasant warm temperatures. After a balanced breakfast, nothing could stop us that day. By midday we had already covered 13 kilometres. The birds along the way sang along to our anthem. In the late afternoon, the clouds cleared a little and we decided to take a break on the green meadow right next to a cow pasture. The moment seemed so peaceful and relaxing. Later, we deeply regretted this break. The clouds gathered more and more and the sunny and peaceful landscape on the mountains between the Moselle became increasingly gloomy. It was palpable that rain would surprise us at any moment. Completely driven by the urge to reach our destination for the day, we remained unimpressed. Until the point where our uneasy feeling came true and the cloud cover broke. Warm summer rain poured down on us. Our walking pace turned into a slow jog.
Refuge Wolf on the Moselle
A quick look around showed us that we were very close to the village of Wolf on the Moselle. We quickly decided that we would ask about accommodation there. From the hiking trail, we came to Monastery of the villageFrom there, we could see the village in the valley. In the initial darkness of night and still marching in the pouring rain, we walked down the road into the valley. Our point of reference was the prominent church tower of Wolf. We assumed at the time that we would surely find a hostel in the centre of the village. At the church, we immediately noticed the yellow house with lots of flowers. Fortunately, the hostess was there and welcomed us with a beaming smile. Finally, we had found shelter at the Brigitte Henkel guesthouse in Wolf on the Moselle. We were immediately given warm towels and were able to move into our room. The hostess, Brigitte Henkel, kindly asked if we could get something to eat in a nearby restaurant with a view of the Moselle. Our day in the rain seemed to be saved.
Travelling to the Moselle by rowing boat
I met my husband at our university rowing club, so it's no surprise that we still pursue our old passion. The Moselle river is ideal for this. There isn't too much boat traffic and there are special landing stages for rowing boats in many places. So this summer, we decided to explore the Moselle in our Emma, our 14-year-old rowing boat for two people. My husband was particularly looking forward to this trip, as he knows the Moselle from his childhood. He used to go there with his parents and brother to enjoy the warm summer months. Back then, holidays in your own country were the only way to escape the stress of everyday life, and the Moselle was a wonderful change of scenery.
Planning for a holiday on the Moselle
First, I inquired about possible accommodation options in the area. With its special jetty for rowing boats and canoes, Wolf was ideally located on our planned route as a possible destination. So we booked accommodation with Brigitte Henkel in Wolf. Our tour itself started in Konz. The weather at this time of year was magnificent. Our holiday on the Moselle turned into a pleasure on the water. We wanted to cover about 30 kilometres every day with our rowing boat. With the help of the current, this distance was also a feasible goal. We really enjoyed being so close to the wild currents of the river. I still have vivid memories of the many impressions from our rowing tour. On the third day, we finally passed Kröv and steered our rowing boat towards the small jetty. Fortunately, there was a restaurant directly opposite where we could enjoy a delicious meal and satisfy our hunger. The Henkel guesthouse was only a few minutes away. We were greeted warmly by the guesthouse manager, Brigitte Henkel. We spent the rest of the late afternoon chatting animatedly with Mrs Henkel. She was simply amazed that we had arrived by rowing boat.
Weigh anchor in Wolf on the Moselle

Thanks to our efforts, we both slept wonderfully that night. Breakfast was lovingly prepared and decorated with great attention to detail. Colourful flowers adorned the cold cuts. After breakfast, we took a short walk through the village centre. I personally remember the many quarry stone houses most vividly. My husband was more enthusiastic about lunch. Overall, we enjoyed it so much that we decided to extend our stay in Wolf an der Mosel by one night. It was a little sad to say goodbye the next morning, but we left the village with new friends and wonderful memories. The rest of the rowing boat trip took us past swan nests, barrages, quaint Moselle villages and, of course, many vineyards. We really enjoyed our trip to the Moselle and may return next year for another trip to our favourite places on the Moselle.
Family gets together | Moselle holiday as an annual family reunion
The holiday on the Moselle was probably something my grandfather did in his youth. Nowadays, holidays on the Moselle are a firm tradition in our family. It is the wonderful moments and memories of our childhood that keep bringing us back to the Moselle with our own children. My two brothers and sisters have all started their own families and no longer live in our home region of North Holland. Every year, our parents take the opportunity to invite us to this family tradition in the summer. For more than 30 years, we have been booking the holiday flat with Brigitte Henkel. In the beginning, we rented the holiday apartment from Mrs Henkel's mother. It has become one of the few moments when the whole family gets together, so it is taboo to cancel this holiday at short notice. The date is set at least a year in advance and is mandatory for all of us. No one knows for sure, but our father would probably never speak to us again as punishment.
The family reunion on the Moselle
So last year, we packed everything up again to enjoy a two-week holiday on the Moselle. My two daughters were looking forward to seeing their grandparents. I, on the other hand, was looking forward to driving to the Moselle in my new car. The late summer weather was glorious. The Moselle showed itself from its most beautiful side. I had forgotten how peaceful it is on the Moselle. On the first evening, I sat with my brothers and sister in the wine arbour. Together we drank five bottles of wine that we had bought from the winegrowers in the village. It was a very funny evening and we talked a lot about the nonsense we got up to together as children. The next day we went on a hike to Bernkastel-Kues. We took one of the tourist boats back home. My daughters were tired and my wife Susanne also seemed a little exhausted. My mother surprised us with a cooked dinner.
Old habits and a cosy evening
In the evening, we all watched a film together in the living room of the holiday flat. Over the next few days, we either went on a bike ride, hiked along the Moselle, took a trip to Trier and Cochem, or discussed history and politics in the vine arbour in front of the holiday flat. My daughters enjoyed playing with their cousins. My parents, in turn, enjoyed seeing us and spending time with their grandchildren. I particularly enjoyed our bike ride to Zell.
My sister, on the other hand, loves hiking among the vineyards and spending evenings in the winegrower's courtyard. As always when we holiday on the Moselle, we had a wonderful time together. Mrs Henkel occasionally honoured us with her presence, and so we socialised and emptied a few bottles of wine late into the night. The holiday flat has its own charm. The grapevine in front of the house almost embraces the old half-timbered building. For me, it is a special place, certainly also because I associate so many memories with it. After two weeks, our wonderful time on the Moselle came to an end and my little family set off for home. Finally, we waved goodbye to our warm host, Mrs Henkel, and promised to visit her again next year at the latest.
With a fishing rod and a wine glass
Fishing and thus the holiday on the Moselle was one of the most beautiful and entertaining holiday destinations for fishing. In the past, I have visited many places to pursue my hobby of fishing in complete relaxation. However, I have never had as much fun as I did on the Moselle. My wife researched some nice guesthouses and accommodation in advance, so that we could decide on a place to stay together on a relaxed Sunday. Coming from Lindau by car, it took us about four hours to reach the Moselle Valley. The village of Wolf on the Moselle was recommended to me by friends. Wolf is one of the quietest places on the Moselle and promises undisturbed fishing and good wine. This time, my wife wanted to actively participate in fishing and read a book in between.
We arrived in Wolf in the late afternoon and moved into our holiday flat. Mrs Henkel recommended a restaurant nearby where we could get something tasty to eat. The next morning, we were woken by the sun. After breakfast, we set off to finally enjoy some relaxing fishing. I had obtained a permit in advance and knew roughly what I was allowed to catch in the Moselle. After a while, we had our first success in the quiver. The perch was of a respectable average size. My wife was thrilled that we had caught something so quickly. She always associates fishing with hours of waiting and a lot of patience. (Which is actually what it is.)
Fishing is best done together | A new acquaintance
Shortly afterwards, another angler came by. My wife got talking to him and didn't even notice how quickly the time flew by. In the evening, our new acquaintance invited us over, and we spent a wonderful evening with him and his wife. He told us at length about his many fishing mishaps with his son, and I couldn't help but laugh heartily. The next morning, after breakfast, we set off together to fish at the fishing club's pond. This was one of my most memorable fishing experiences. By the afternoon, we had caught about six fish.
We ended the evening with a barbecue right on the Moselle, where we ate our catch with potatoes and tzatziki. Halfway through, I fulfilled my wife's wish and we drove to Trier to spend a day browsing the shops. I spent the last few days fishing behind the Wolfer Berg. The view is magnificent and the view of the vineyards is unparalleled. All in all, we had a very nice holiday in Wolf on the Moselle. The warm nature of the landlady made it easy for us to settle in and made it difficult for us to leave later. Many new acquaintances and convivial evenings with wine characterise my memories of the Moselle. We will certainly come back soon and toast the big catch with wine.
