Mont Royal (fortress ruins)<\/a>Visit the last remaining sections of a former French fortress in the heart of what is now Rhineland-Palatinate. The fortress was built between 1678 and 1698 under the direction of fortress architect S\u00e9bastien Le Prestre de Vauban. The result was a 50-hectare complex in the middle of the Traben-Trarbach mountain. The ramparts alone were 20 metres high and had a total length of 2.920 km. The complex was designed to accommodate 8,450 soldiers and 3,000 cavalry horses.<\/div>\n
Grevenburg Castle<\/a>The landmark of the town of Traben-Trarbach and now a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee and soak up the history of the place. This castle was built in 1350 by Johann III von Sponheim and became the new seat of the County of Sponheim. However, in 1437, the Sponheim family died out and the complex was subsequently conquered by Louis XIV. \u00a0The fortress remained under French rule until 1734, when it was largely blown up.<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n
